Biography for Caroline "Carly" Roberts Benson Quartermaine Corinthos Alcazar

Present time

At the present time, Carly is newly married to Lorenzo Alcazar, and is living with him and her son by ex-husband Sonny Corinthos, in the new home that Alcazar gave her as a wedding present. Her oldest son Michael, angry at her re-marriage to Sonny's enemy, is now living with Sonny at his Greystone home. Carly is suspicious of Sonny's new girlfriend, FBI agent Reese Marshall, with good reason: Reese is in actuality Charlotte Roberts, Carly's high school friend. Carly thought her dead, having been killed in a car crash, which to this day still traumatizes Carly so much that she is unable to drive. Her "friend" has come to Port Charles with the sole purpose of getting revenge on Carly for (in her twisted mind) "stealing her life". Danger lurks, as Carly grows closer to uncovering "Reese's" true identity and vendetta. Meantime, Carly copes with the devastating truth that her disturbed 9 year old son Michael has confessed to being the real murderer of her despised first husband AJ Quartermaine. Carly is currently estranged from her biological father, Federal Prosecutor John Durant, who had made it his mission to take down her then-husband Sonny Corinthos. Durant's recent shooting, and his resulting paralysis, will only complicate matters: he plans to sue Carly's mother Bobbie, a surgical nurse, in an attempt to punish her for keeping her pregnancy a secret from him. Meanwhile, he continues to scheme to regain his place in Carly's very complicated life......................

Her Past

Carly moved to Port Charles in 1996 with the full intent of revenge against her biological mother, whom Carly thought had abandoned her as a newborn baby. Bobbie Spencer on the other hand, did not know Carly was her daughter. Bobbie gave Carly up for adoption when she gave birth to her as a teenage prostitute in Florida. Bobbie thought her daughter was dead, only her brother Luke, Carly's uncle and Carly herself knew the truth.

Carly started having a sexual relationship with Jason, which was ended as soon as Jason discovered his feelings for Robin. Carly then started an affair with Bobbie's husband Tony, in hopes of destroying her mother's life. After Tony's fling with Carly was found out, Bobbie and Tony divorced, and Tony moved in with Carly. Bobbie was trapped in a fire and Tony rescued her, much to Carly's dismay, and when they began to grow close, Carly mailed Bobbie the custody papers (for Lucas) that Tony had decided not to use. This tore Tony and Bobbie apart. Carly's little plot was soon discovered, and Tony and Carly had a huge fight.

Carly, believing that she and Tony were through, went to Jake's (a local dive bar above which Jason lived) to find Jason. While she was waiting for Jason to return, she got drunk with A.J. (not knowing he was Jason's brother) and they went upstairs to Jason's room and made love. When she returned home, she found Tony waiting and they kissed and made up. Carly then found out she was pregnant, but she did not know who the baby's father was.

Tony unaware of her fling with A.J., assumed the baby was his, and Carly set out to ruin A.J. so that he would stop trying to remember the night they spent at Jake's. Tony proposed to Carly (mostly because of the baby, although he says not) and Carly accepted. However, in the heat of an argument, Carly admitted the baby was not his. Around this same time, Carly told Bobbie that she was the child Bobbie had given up for adoption years ago. These two bombshells caused Tony and Carly to split, and Carly moved in with Jason.

The two agreed to tell everyone that the baby was theirs, but in reality, it was AJ and Carly's. Shortly after Michael was born, Tony kidnapped him because he considered Carly and Jason unfit parents. Tony had the cunning Alexis Davis as his lawyer, and she got him off with nothing but community service. This outraged Carly, so she shot Tony in open court. Carly was committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation.

With Jason's help Carly got released from the mental hospital, but not before Robin returned and both Jason and Michael had moved into her cottage. Carly moved into the cottage temporally, so that Michael could get used to her again. Robin and Carly did not get along. Eventually, Robin decided that she had enough and she returned to Paris, but not before telling AJ that he was Michael's father. A desperate Carly came up with a plan to keep Michael. She went to the Quartermaine's and told them that Jason had kidnapped Michael, when in fact she had made plans with Jason to leave the country with Jason and Michael. Carly moved in to the Quartermaine mansion, and married AJ. After seeing Jason dance with Liz Webber, Carly had a one night stand with Sonny Corinthos. Jason found her and Sonny the next day and ended up leaving town. Carly was mortified to find out she was pregnant with Sonny's child. Sonny soon learned the truth and called her on it, in front of all the Quartermaines. AJ was furious and demanded that Carly stay in the mansion under house arrest. Jason called Sonny and gave him evidence that AJ had hired an arsonist to set Jason and Sonny's coffee warehouse on fire in 1999 and Sonny used that information to blackmail AJ into signing over all rights to Michael and allowing Carly to leave. Carly reluctantly moved into Sonny's penthouse and the two shared a seemingly tumultuous relationship.

One night when Carly was at the Quartermaine mansion to visit with Lila, she and AJ had an encounter on the stairs. AJ had just come home drunk, and the two began to fight. Carly then lost her balance and feel backwards onto the floor of the foyer. She was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors told Sonny that she was very seriously hurt. If the baby was not aborted, Carly would die. So, after saying goodbye to what he later found out to be his son, Sonny authorized the abortion. When she woke up after the operation, Carly did not remember what had happened and she was confused as to where the baby had gone. Sonny explained to her what had occurred, and she fell into a temporary state of depression. Sonny then took Carly and Michael to his private island in Puerto Rico so that she could recover from losing the baby.

A while after they returned home, Sonny's father Mike got into trouble with some loan sharks who happened to be working for Sonny's archenemy, Joseph Sorel. Carly, thinking that she would be helping Sonny, arranged it so that a meeting between Sorel and Mike in a motel room would be recorded and busted in on by the cops so that Sorel would get arrested. However, at the last minute, Sonny found out about the meeting, and furious at Mike, decided to go meet with Sorel himself to straighten things out. Carly was not aware of this change, and continued everything as planned. She hid in the closet in the motel room dressed as a hooker, and waited for Mike and Sorel to show up. Sonny came instead, and when the cops showed up, she was discovered in the closet. Since Carly was the only witness, she would be forced to testify against Sonny and would probably send him to prison. Alexis Davis, his lawyer, said that the only way she could get out of this would be to marry Sonny since spouses can't be forced to incriminate each other. Although enraged at Carly for what she had done, Sonny agreed to marry her if it would keep him out of jail.

They were married by a justice of the peace in Sonny's penthouse with Alexis and Jason as witnesses. After many fights and rough spots, Carly and Sonny eventually realized that they liked each other and decided to remain married and give each other a chance. Although they were falling in love, neither of them would admit it. Later on, Sonny and Alexis helped release a young man named Zander Smith from prison. Zander, who was also Emily Quartermaine's boyfriend, had been framed for murder after working for Sorel, and his testimony would put Sorel in prison, so Sonny decided to help him. On the night that Zander was released, Sonny, Alexis, Zander, and Emily were walking down the steps of the PCPD, when two gunmen dressed as police officers fired at them. Sonny was wounded badly, and before he went unconscious, he told Alexis to tell Carly that he loved her.

After receiving Sonny's message, Carly was more determined than ever that Sonny would be okay. When his heart stopped beating, she forced the doctors to shock him one more time, and he lived. Sonny told her that he came back for her and she admitted that she loved him too. Then as a surprise, Sonny proposed to Carly and told her that he wanted to retake their vows in front of God in a chapel on Martinique. Everything was going well until Sonny was almost killed again. This time in a warehouse fire caused by Sorel. Sonny realized that by being married to him, Carly would only be in danger. He tried to break off the marriage, but Carly wouldn't hear it, and flew to Martinique. Sonny followed her with the intention of hurting her so that she would hate him, but Carly saw right through his plan and made him realize that they should be together and the couple renewed their wedding vows.

After Carly again betrayed Sonny, this time by attempting to get him into the Witness Protection Program, Sonny broke it off with his wife. When Sorel held Carly and Alexis hostage in the Corinthos penthouse, Zander tried to rescue them but was shot by Sorel instead. Sonny came in wearing a bomb. Sorel was injured severely when the bomb went off but Sonny was okay. Sorel later was murdered by his daughter, Angel Ellis, at General Hospital. Everyone survived the bomb blast with minor injuries. Taggert, who was on the scene, suffered a temporary hearing loss.

Sonny got his best union contractors on the job and both penthouses were quickly back in order. Sonny had to completely redecorate his penthouse which pleased Carly since she never cared for the original. However, Sonny and Carly could not make amends and the divorce Sonny had filed for proceeded. Even though they were getting divorced, Carly agreed to allow Sonny to adopt Michael. Sonny then assigned Zander to watch over Carly. Carly and Zander became friends as they tried to get over Sonny and Emily together. Zander even protected Carly when one of Sorel's men, Roscoe, tried to shake her down for protection money to keep out of her new nightclub. Zander reported everything back to Sonny but felt guilty about betraying Carly. He finally confessed to Carly that he was keeping an eye out for her under Sonny's orders. Carly warned him not to tell Sonny that Zander had informed her of why he was hanging around, but Zander didn't listen. When he told Sonny he informed Carly of his work assignment, Sonny fired Zander on the spot. After a verbal teardown from Alexis, Sonny rehired Zander. Zander gave Carly driving lessons to help Carly get over her fear of driving, a fear that was brought on when Carly's high school friend was killed in a horrible car accident.

While Carly and Sonny became less and less involved, Carly grew closer to Zander. One night, Carly went to Sonny's penthouse and saw him in the afterglow of sex with Alexis. Hurt, she went to Zander's and they almost made love, but a comment she made implied that she was using him to get over Sonny, and he threw her out. Devastated, Carly fled. She was missing and feared dead when her car went over a cliff. After several days of her loved ones mourning, she dramatically reappeared in the middle of her own funeral! Sonny was thrilled to have a second chance with her. Carly had actually stayed away a few extra days, then "accidentally" stumbled onto her memorial service for maximum impact, but Sonny quickly forgave her when he learned this news. Meanwhile, Carly found out that Alexis was pregnant, possibly with Sonny's baby. She and Sonny believed Alexis when she produced (faked) paternity test results proclaiming Ned the father.

With Sonny's financial backing, Carly opened a nightclub called The Cellar with Sonny's associate Ric Lansing. Unbeknownst to her, Ric was actually Sonny's vengeance-seeking half brother. When she saw Sonny kissing a back-from-the-dead Brenda Barrett, she feared the worst and was consoled by Ric. Her drink had already been drugged by one of Faith's goons and he took advantage of the situation. The next morning, she woke up in bed with him. To make matters worse, she discovered she was pregnant. Torn over who the father could be, she confessed the truth to Sonny and they uncovered Ric's deception. Carly planned for a happy future for herself, Sonny, Michael and their baby, but Ric kidnapped her on Jason and Courtney's wedding day, hiding her in a panic room in his house, planning to keep her there until she delivered the baby he could present to his wife Liz Webber (who had just lost their child) as an adopted infant. Carly stayed strong through weeks of imprisonment as well as watching Ric's life on closed-circuit cameras. Finally, just when Sonny and Jason were about to find her, she was kidnapped by Ric's crime partner, Lorenzo Alcazar. Lorenzo demanded a high price for her release. After several days, she was rescued by Sonny, but Alcazar had become obsessed with her in the process.

Alcazar tried to romance Carly away from Sonny by sending her gifts. When it became obvious that it wasn't working, Alcazar hatched a plan to make over a prostitute to look exactly like Lily, Sonny's dead first wife. Alcazar then had "Lily" haunt Sonny and convince Sonny that his wife and child would be hurt because of him unless he left them. So Sonny bought Carly her dream house and told her that she would live there with the boys without him. Carly fought him during the whole process. But when "Lily" slipped up and told Sonny something from their past together that never happened, Sonny realized that it wasn't Lily he had been talking to. On a stormy night, Carly went to look at the house by herself and slipped on the stairs. She fell and then went into labor. Courtney found her and went for help, but got in a car wreck before she could tell anyone where Carly was. Alcazar found Courtney and she told him about Carly. He then rushed off to help Carly. When he arrived, she convinced him that no matter what happened to her, he had to get her baby to the hospital because he had a possible heart condition. Alcazar was helping Carly deliver her baby when Sonny finally arrived at the house. From outside, Sonny heard Carly scream and kicked in the door. He fired his gun at Alcazar and then helped Carly finish delivering the baby. Carly saw the baby then passed out: the bullet Sonny had fired had passed through Alcazar and into Carly's head.

Carly was in a coma for a few weeks, during which she dreamt of an alternate life: Alcazar was her husband and they didn't have anything to do with the mob. Then Sonny took a liking to Carly and tried to break them apart. Alcazar responded by putting a hit out on Sonny. In Carly's dream, she ended up living a long life with Alcazar. While she was in the coma, Sonny hardly ever left her side. But when he did, Alcazar was there. Sonny hated that, but the doctors seemed to think that Carly responded to Alcazar's voice and presence. When Carly finally awoke, she asked for Alcazar. Although Carly was physically healthy for the most part, her memories of the love she felt for Sonny and her children were buried beneath the love she felt in her dreams of Alcazar.

Sonny took Carly and the kids to the island where he had a talk with Carly. Carly confessed her feelings, or lack there of, and Sonny took off to confront Alcazar. Carly called Alcazar and told him to get out of town before Sonny could find him. Instead, Alcazar stayed behind to set Sonny up for attempted murder. Carly arrived on the scene to try to stop Sonny from shooting Alcazar but she was too late. After shooting Alcazar, Sonny ran in front of a car and got the driver, Sam, to get him out of there. Fearful that Sonny would be convicted and sent to prison, Carly whisked Sonny off to France to begin a life on the run as a fugitive. But Sonny decided he needed to be a good example to their children and went back to Port Charles to face the music. After an emotional testimony by Sonny, the jury found him not guilty. Afterwards, Carly was telling off Alcazar for setting up Sonny when she collapsed. She awoke with her feelings of love for Sonny and her kids fully restored.

Carly was just beginning her life again with her family when she started experiencing blinding flashes of light and erotic dreams involving Alcazar, leaving Carly with unresolved feelings for Alcazar.
